Natalie Shugars – ISES WOW Awards

Will I See You on 4/19?

I had the pleasure of attending my first ISES Awards show last year for the Ohio WOW Awards in Columbus. What a wonderful experience! I was new to ISES at the time. And just learning about the organization, and everything it has to offer a member. I have to say, I felt so welcomed. As the new kid on the block, I was introduced to so many people in our industry. It was an amazing event! What a great way to see the talents, and works of the best in Ohio, showcased under one roof. I feel that it truly benefited myself, and my company by giving us the opportunity to become familiar with others in our industry. The Wow Awards not only provided a great networking experience, but an inner connection between these top event professionals. It was amongst one of my top events I have attended so far. It really helped to kick things in gear for me. I have since experienced growth within ISES. I have become a member of the events committee, and a Director At Large for the Cleveland Board. My advise to anyone who is undecided about attending this event is, if you want to grow, and witness what ISES is all about, and has to offer, come get “WOW’d”!

Reflections of ISES at The Special Event

Our chapter was so excited to travel to fellow midwest chapter, ISES Chicago.  We chuckled to ourselves when the email came out from headquarters regarding what to wear as we are used to the cold temps. here in Cleveland…. I am pondering if Spring will ever come!

ISES Cleveland was very well represented, having 8 board members in attendance.  It was great to hear from the other chapters in the roundtable discussion.  What is working for them and what isn’t working and how we, as a chapter and region, were able to give our input. We have monthly president calls, but being in the room with these individuals, we were able to produce some serious hail on that brainstorm!  Being on the board for the past 5 years, I have seen our chapter in many of the phases others are in.  I am fortunate to lead a strong chapter with many past presidents and current board members who returned to the board for another tour of duty.

While in Chicago I took time to reflect on what I could do in the remaining months as President to make our chapter stronger.  I want to keep our members connected and involved.  Our chapter strives at listening to our members and implementing the ideas they have.

I hope you see the value in your membership.  Many of the people in ISES are my creative partners (vendors), but more importantly they are my friends.  I can call them for ideas and lean on them in times of need.

My door is always open to listen to what you want out of your membership.  I hope you don’t feel that this is just a membership group to join but a true investment into your career and your future.

I look forward to The Special Event 2014 in Nashville, TN (yee-haw!).  I plan to stay an extra day to walk the show floor and attend more of the educational sessions that are offered.  If you can take a few days to attend I highly recommend it.  It is great to meet in person many of the people you interact with, follow on Twitter, or just to hang out with many of the talented individuals who make up the Events Industry!

Be Educated, Be Inspired, Be Connected by Maureen Patterson

Many of the ISES Cleveland Board Members took the opportunity to visit Chicago in January 2013 for the ISES Midwest Retreat, ISES Leadership Summit, and The Special Event. Each attendee is going to share their experice with you on our blog. If you are interested in learning more about TSE 2013, make sure to REGISTER HERE for our TSE In Review Event on February 19th, 2013. Here is Director at Large, Maureeen Patterson’s ISES Leadership & TSE 2013 experience:

Be Educated, Be Inspired, Be Connected

This phrase captures what ISES is all about.  This was evident throughout the leadership meetings, retreats, and sessions held before The Special Event.  Being new to the board of ISES Cleveland, I learned a lot from other chapters and leaders, had the pleasure of meeting members from across the globe, and have an excitement to help incorporate these ideas into our Cleveland chapter.
Throughout the Midwest retreat, we heard from several other chapters.  Some were struggling to keep their ISES chapters going.  The chapters who have been thriving offered wonderful ideas and tips on events and programming as well as how to communicate the value of ISES to their area.  Also, several international leaders made time to talk with these chapters to help them along the way.  Seeing so many people getting involved to help one another was moving.  This encouraged open ideas and a sense of community that can be difficult to find in the industry at times.

solus-lighting-cleveland-ises

We learned from these chapters and leaders different ways to keep ISES relevant and beneficial to newcomers as well as seasoned pros – locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.  I know the Cleveland chapter is eager to share all of this with you.  Join us and be educated, be inspired, be connected!

Why Am I Here? – Matt Radicelli

Here is Director at Large, Matt Radicelli’s TSE 2013 experience:

“Why Am I Here?”

Why are you sitting and doing what it is that you’re doing right now?  This very moment… Whether you’re in a cubical quoting insurance, in a kitchen feeding a baby, or at a special events convention like me…

I’m fortunate that I’m able to visit The Special Event in Chicago this year. I’m a student of customer service, Karma & good will, and lord knows I do my best to keep my life balance in check; but the first seminar that I chose this morning was about “building the business you want to achieve the life balance you dream about.” with Tami Forero from http://www.forteevents.com.  Great Choice!

matt radicelli tse cleveland djs ises

My best takeaway is a simple concept that I feel strongly and passionate about: Every moment of your day you should ask yourself, “Do I love doing this? Am I good at it? Does it make me money?” It sounds simple right?  While I’m not suggesting that you quit your job selling insurance, leave your baby at home alone, or boycott that convention or workshop your boss sent you to… I am suggesting that your life balance is probably out of whack if you can’t say yes to all three of those questions. If you can say YES to all three, GREAT! Your life balance is probably in a good place. If you can’t say YES to all three,  get to work, write it on the wall, and make it happen!

So why am I here?

I love Special Events. I am good at them. They make me money.

Word.

Why Join ISES?

You Want In On This

Many of the ISES Cleveland Board members spent January 14th in Chicago before The Special Event learning ways to make our ISES Chapters even better. We asked attendees to say, in their own words, why you should join ISES. Here’s what they had to say:

The event industry is always evolving. ISES gives you the opportunity to stay on top of the trends and stay connected. -Rachel Fuller

ISES is a great organization to expand your business network, promote creative thinking, and serve as a mechanism to help build trust and teamwork with other piers in the event industry.  Everyone has strengths and weaknesses and through a cooperative effort, everyone benefits.  Not only will your strengths help other ISES members but ISES is the perfect organization to work on your weaknesses.  ISES embraces the sharing of knowledge and through active participation personal and professional growth is sure to follow.  - Dale McDonald

ISES is one of the only event industry organizations that is truly global. In this day and age of uber-connectivity, having those global resources are becoming more and more prevalent and important” – Shannon Harris

ISES membership is the best way to grow your business through strength of diversity of ideas . - Deb Smythe Hermann

Becoming a committee or board member is a great way to hone your leadership skills. -Scott Pickel

ISES’s commitment to continuing the organizations position to remain relevant in the global market is amazingly valuable.  Wherever your events career may take you logistically, there are ISES members to collaborate with – either in person or or via the ISES Community. - Maureen Patterson

ISES embraces ALL aspects of the creative event industry which makes us standout from other professional societies.  - Laura Hoffman

Remember the Cool Kids Table at School? They were the best looking, the funniest, and had the best sneakers. ISES Cleveland is inviting you to the cool kids table. Hang with the most creative, passionate, and committed professionals in the event industry. Also, our sneakers are pretty cool too. – Nick Borelli
